Case Study : Haverhill Chamber of Commerce & Industry 2003 - 2005 *
Project Type: self-funding within two months.
Initial Funding: £500 provided by Suffolk Chamber.
As at June 2005: funds in hand in excess of £9000.

In November 2003 Gold formed the Haverhill Chamber of Commerce with three business colleagues. As well as running our own business, we were responsible for the marketing and PR element of the Haverhill Chamber until September 2005. Our purpose in forming the Chamber was to create an inclusive forum for local business. From the beginning, we worked in partnership with Haverhill’s two upper schools and maintained links with the borough and town councils.

This was a challenging role, requiring energy and vision, effective management and sound copy writing skills. It demanded a complex and sensitive PR strategy. Vital to its success was an understanding of the project’s initial fragility.

Within six months of establishing the chamber we launched our second idea: the Haverhill Business Awards. We regarded it as the optimum moment to reinforce what had already been achieved. The aim of the initiative, which Gold directed throughout, was to elevate the profile of the town across the East of England and focus attention on Haverhill as a business centre of excellence. The awards programme was designed to raise expectations and to be inspirational for the entire community.

The scheme attracted sponsorship from organisations as diverse as BAA Stansted, Barclays Bank, Vibe FM, Genzyme, IFF and Risk & Safety Solutions. The duration of the cycle was one year and the programme culminated in a Gala Ball and Awards Ceremony held in May 2005, which was attended by nearly 400 key members of the area’s business community and representatives from organisations across the region.

As a result of the outstanding success of the Haverhill Business Awards, the Haverhill Chamber now enjoys a healthy financial position and has a secure future. Indeed, the Chamber’s local recognition awareness was so raised by our communication strategy, that with the company's resignation from the Chamber Committee, it has been necessary to hire a marketing officer to promote its activities and subsequently an admin assistant.

Membership, by November 2005, embraced all sectors of local business and reflected the appeal of the Chamber to organisations both large and small. These ranged from BAA Stansted through to Grampian Foods, Genzyme, Haverhill Electrical, Taylor’s Foundry, Suffolk Insurance and both upper schools, as well as local solicitors, accountants and banks.
